Arepas & Armies

As you may know, one of my favorite categories of foods is things in dough. So anytime I can have or make some variation on that I’m pretty happy. For this game night, I decided to try my hand at making a thing in dough that I love but had never made before. We also got to bust out our favorite crunchy flip & write!

Arepas Two Ways

I love a good fried plantain in my arepa, so I knew this Minimalist Baker recipe was a must try for me. It was pretty simple- fried plantains, cooked and seasoned black beans, and guacamole (use premade if you’re short on time). Next time I might even try it with some veggie meat, although it was pretty good as is!

Tofu

These shredded tofu arepas from Plant Based RD were a huge hit and the recipe was requested! A little more work, but well worth it! Just shred up some tofu and bake it, then mix in some slightly mashed chickpeas with seasonings. This called for guasasaca, which I wasn’t familiar with, but seems like it’s just a twist on guacamole. I’m good with plain guacamole or avocado, but if you want your with a twist, try this!

The arepas themselves were basically the same for both recipes, so of course I did a double batch of each and had way too many lol. Minimalist Baker did have you fry only slightly and then bake, whereas Plant Based RD had you fry them fully. Honestly I’m not sure if I noticed a huge difference. The dough was super easy to put together. My one question for next time is what to do differently to get the thickness right. Arepas are tricky in that you need them thick enough to slice open, but thin enough to not be too dough-y. We’ll keep experimenting…

Hadrian’s Wall

Hadrian’s Wall is a crunch and a half! It’s one of the most complicated flip/roll & writes out there, but it’s so satisfying! Everything you do seems to feed into something else, so you’re constantly crossing off this which gives you that which lets you do this, etc.

The game is played in 6 rounds, and each round you have starting resources, as well as your own resources from your cards. You also choose a card to be a personal end-game goal. Then you use those resources to cross off as many things on your sheets as you can, like building walls, forts, cipis, guards, citizens, markets, temples, and gladiators (but who really does gladiators??). It’s very overwhelming at first, but once you read the symbology, you’re off on your merry way. I still ignore a few sections and focus on my favorites (scouting and markets!), but hey, to each their own. If you like roll/fip and writes and want something more complicated, this is the game for you!
