We first discovered Citizen Cafe & Bakery last summer while driving around Saskatchewan. While they are not an all vegan or even all vegetarian place, they do have enough delicious options to be note-worthy in a place like Saskatoon!
Last summer when we went, we first spent an afternoon hanging out playing Eco Fluxx, drinking coffee, and enjoying delicious treats like pop tarts (“house made fruit fillings inside flaky golden pastry with a drizzle of icing and sprinkles”) and Nanaimo bars. The pop tart was pretty good, but that Nanaimo bar was amazing! We also got lunch to go on our way to Regina, and enjoyed the vegan BLT (“signature smoky eggplant “bacon” with tomato, cucumber, red onion, fresh greens, and cheesy dill spread on Night Oven sourdough”) and vegan ruben sandwiches. They were both delightful, but I think the ruben (“caraway-marinated mushrooms with Naturally Amped sauerkraut, Thousand Island dressing, and cheesy dill spread, pressed on Night Oven sourdough”)was the real winner of that meal. Then we stopped back in on our way home, picking up a box of delicious treats so full I was too embarrassed to even take a picture of all the things inside.😂 I don’t even remember all the things we got, but I was a happy camper driving home.
This summer we are back in Saskatchewan on a work trip, so we once again stopped at Citizen for a lunch to go. Having remembered how good it was last summer, we both got the reubens (Jon substituting the mushrooms for their eggplant bacon on his), and then getting a peanut butter chocolate cookie- “house made peanut butter chip baked in the center of a double chocolate cookie. Topped with melted chocolate and roasted peanuts.” Man that was an amazing cookie.
On the way home, we spent the night in Saskatoon, so of course got Citizen on our way out of town. We got the vegan breakfast panini, which is honestly very similar to their ruben/BLT. We also got a cherry blueberry pop tart (delightful), a mixed berry crumble muffin (honestly one of the best muffins I’ve had in a while), and a millionaire shortbread bar (“tahini caramel sandwiched in between rich chocolate and an almond shortbread crust”), which I tragically waited too long to eat and got all melty in the hot car. But the flavor was good!
They also had a Sea Buckthorn Brownie (“fudgy chocolate brownie with sea buckthorn berry icing, a citrusy tropical flavour of a Saskatchewan native plant. Topped with house made sprinkles. Think something like the classic pairing of chocolate and passionfruit”), which I considered getting.
All in all, this cafe and bakery is a delightful oasis for vegans looking for little treats. From the classics of scones, cookies, muffins, and cinnamon rolls, to more unusual finds like pop-tarts and bars, this place has all the sugary goodness a vegan could want. I wish they had a few more vegan savory options, but the ones they have are great! Check this place out!
